A Brief Lake Hopatcong Area History
Originally, there were two lakes. The Nariticong clans of the Delaware Indian Nation live on the east shore of Lake Hopatcong, with a large village on Halsey Island. The Indians lived there for thousands of years fishing, farming and hunting throughout the region. When the lake draws down, arrowheads were a regular find on the sandbars in the 1960’s.
Dutch trappers started to have contact with Nariticong’s and with other Lenape Indians and bought a large section that included Roxbury Township. Other land deals killed the Indian presence for the lake region.
In the 1750’s a dam was constructed that raised the water level by 6 feet permanently joining both lakes. The Morris Canal was built that carried over a million tons of freight in its heyday, mostly coal, iron and timber. However the technology of railroads ended the canal era and opened accessibility to the lake.
In its day, before mass discovery, Lake Hopatcong was the vacation destination of the wealthy and those in the know, a magnet for many of the "rich and famous" of the day. Lake Hopatcong was home to seventy-five hotels and two hundred boarding houses. ... an excellent nine-hole golf course, the Lake Hopatcong Country Club, Bertrand Island Amusement Park, weekly regattas and other aquatic events. Many summer cottages dotted the lake for this famous summer resort.
The lake continues to be a popular summer and winter resort with its close proximity to winter ski areas and summer activities. Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater lake in the state of New Jersey located in the mountains of northern New Jersey bordering Morris and Sussex County.
